We here at Elegant Changes can’t believe the summer has gone by so fast. Where did it go? But this is also an exciting time of year – kids are heading back to school, and some are making the transition to college and university. In honor of this special time, we’ve put together a list of dorm room style tips that will earn you top marks.
It’s All About Storage
Dorm rooms are notoriously small, so you need to make the most out of the space you have. Organization is absolute essential – if you don’t have a bed that comes with drawers, consider the age-old tradition of hoisting your bed on milk crates so you can slip stuff underneath. It’s a cool grunge-esque look! Buy some bins, baskets or plastic rolling storage units that will fit under the bed, in the corners and closets of your room.
Stick It To Décor
Forget about painting – in most dorms, you’re not allowed to give your room a coat of colour and paint can get pretty expensive. Instead, try some sticky decals. They come in a range of colours and designs, and peel off when it’s time to come back home. This budget-friendly option lets you announce your unique style to your college buddies without breaking the bank.
Cut a Rug
Splashes of colour and patterns have their place in dorm rooms – on the floor. You can pick up a cheap rug from Walmart or HomeSense for a few bucks. An added bonus is your feet won’t hit a cold floor when you climb out of bed on a chilly morning.
Get Thrifty
Get to know your local thrift stores around campus – you’ll find some quirky and cool finds to outfit your stylish dorm room. Shopping online can be cheap too. Check out Craigslist.com and Kijiji.ca when you’re looking for items such as furniture. Remember to haggle for the best price.
Have a Seat
You’ll be doing plenty of entertaining while at school (only when you’re not studying, of course). Use items such as an ottoman as a seat option that also doubles as storage. Pick up a couple of vintage chairs from Kijiji or the local Goodwill for one-of-a-kind finds that not only give your friends a place to sit, but are conversation pieces as well.
We wish everyone heading off to school a great year! You’re going to do great!
